April’s Model Build Gathering at Funaka’s

April model build gathering. Dan, (Funaka) convinced his wife to let him hold the April build gathering at his house. It was a smaller gathering, which was nice and relaxing and probably not as taxing on Dan playing build gathering host for the first time. We had a few late comers, and Manny managed to only glance at the build gathering thread and showed up at my house before realizing that the gathering was not actually at my house this month. It was nice to not have to play host, and I got to concentrate on my own projects. I actually got quite a bit of model work done, more than I have ever had in the more recent build gatherings which is a nice change of pace.

It’s no wonder I got sick… I need to slow the f down…

I’ve been sick all week. Still sick actually. It started off this past Sunday for what I thought was just your run of the mill hangover from the previous night’s drinking festivities, turned out to be something completely different. I started coughing on Sunday, and sorta getting short of breath which was weird, but since I don’t normally get so dehydrated and hungover, I thought it was the hangover. Well, turns out that I was sick enough to venture out and see a bloody doctor, something I haven’t done in well over ten years. Yeah, after four years of military health care, can anyone really blame me for my deathly fear of the doctor’s office? So that’s why there hasn’t been an update for a while, I’ve been laid up sick as shit. But what an update I have.

Starting three weeks ago, the 20th, I went up to Solvang/Santa Barbarbra with Jen and friends, the next day, Art, Brandon, and I hit up Big Bear. The 27th was the monthly model build gathering, and we had a really good turnout. The day after was a trip up to Silverlake for some fishing. Details after the jump.

1/12 Gundam Part Deux

Continuing from where we last left you yesterday; the usual suspects returned today and we had some reinforcements later in the evening. Lakers won, I snapped random pictures with the RX-78, we decaled the ’78, and the Zaku got built; not a bad end to the day. On the way home, I picked up some sandwiches from Lee’s. When I got home, Jay, David, and Sharon were already there. Art had just got there when I pulled up. Angel and Sammy showed up shortly. Later in the evening, Hsiang Wei (Gtetra) showed up, and about two to five minutes after everyone leaves, Mitch shows up. Good thing he did, otherwise, we wouldn’t have finished the decaling for the ’78.

1/12 RX-78-2 Gundam Commission

So last week, I got a call from the local model distributor, chatting up about upcoming anime conventions, model contests, etc; and he asked if I could get a crew together to put together some 1/12 scale gunpla kits for him to use as display pieces. These large HYGM kits came out 5 years ago and I’d seen them once or twice at various conventions and events; so I jumped at the idea; I figured that the usual suspects I gather to work on such projects would be excited. This was sometime last week, and during my busy weekend, it slipped my mind until while in Solvang, someone mentioned the up coming build gathering. I mentioned the possibility of building the two 1/12 scale HYGM kits and all I could see was a HUGE grin form on Angel. They were all in, so I made the call to the distributor and said we were good to go on building the things. I figured that since the build gathering was coming up, I could pick up the kits this week and then just have them sitting there until the build gathering and then just have the folks at the gathering put them together.

Yesterday, I took off work a little early; I still have some hours to burn off too; but I made it out to the distributor’s warehouse and sat down with the guy to discuss some other up coming events and a contest event I’m working on for him. Two hours later – the guy likes to talk, we get around to moving the boxes for the two kits to load into my little tc. I fold down all the seats, and everything fits perfectly. I take off on my way home and then I remember a little bit of the conversation from earlier. I give the guy a call back to confirm that the two kits need to be finished by Friday; he confirms. There goes the idea of doing this at the build gathering. On the drive home, I call up the most local of model builders that I know may be free to help out tonight; and set the evening’s events into motion.
