Lighting the 1/144 Super Heat Hawk

I didn’t get much work on this project this week. We had our broadcast and I did some work finishing up the other side of the Guntank’s tracks, but more on that later. Starting off with the heat hawk, the thing is massive, so I figured I’d light up the damn thing. The first step is to glue to two halves of the hawk’s blade together and fill in the gap on one side of the blade. I just used Mr white putty and filled in the area. Once cured, the excess is sanded as well as the seams and I’m left with the below.

From that, I did this:

See how I got from the first picture to the second after the jump!

This year’s “Piss on a Feddy” Diorama Project

Last month, I picked up Ortega’s Hi-Mo Zaku II because of that massive heat axe and because I was looking for something to snap at the January build gathering. I ended up working on the Gusion; but I managed to open this box and look at it for a few moments. I got the kit ready again a few weeks ago when we had a live broadcast, but I ended up missing that broadcast, so it continues to sit in the box. I felt the need to use the massive axe; so sticking with the Origin theme; I went out and grabbed an Early Type Guntank as a foil piece.

The Guntank came together fairly quickly as it is a very simple kit. But the thing that really bothered me about the kit are the damn tracks. The are solid pieces with the track wheels and come in two pieces which boggled my mind. There is a horrible gap, and after looking at the tracks, it seems like it is designed to have 4 treads. The kit was snapped together with the thought to do something with the treads.

The Zaku kit came together easily, but it was much more complex. A very interesting design especially for the 1/144 scale. I kind of like the chest gimmick to help poseability. But after snapping the thing together, there are some obvious areas where I will be doing some modifications.

An entitled bag of dicks pulls the race card….

I occasionally travel for work. Well, I more than occasionally travel for work. I get to see the fun side of some poor decisions made by folks under the duress of a “bad” travel day. That said, today’s flight home was awesome!

The setup:

An American Airline’s flight from Phoenix AZ to Ontario CA, 3:35 PM take off time operated by American Eagle on a Bombardier CRJ900. Translation: a small commuter jet. I get on fairly early because of my “elite” status, and get to my seat 8A, a window seat in a 4 seat per row one aisle in between configuration. The plane loads up, and it is looking like a full flight. In my sleepy haze, I overhear the lady behind me chatting up her new single serving friend; the conversation topic is English as a second language. The Asian male next to her says his English language skills are lacking; she responds with an accent that she too has poor English skills and is from Africa. Then asks the gentleman where he is from, and he says Laos. She impresses upon him the need to improve one’s English in the new western world they are now part of; and the conversation wanes as the Laotian’s English is quite clearly, not on par with Lady Khama. The plane continued to fill. My hopes of getting my half of the plane’s 8th row to myself were quickly dashed by one of the last few travelers; a bald guy with salt and pepper beard and completely glued to his phone’s messaging service. He was probably traveling for Valentine’s day weekend and smooches are given in a video message. Slightly nauseated, I just wished I had the ability to shut off hearing as I could my sight.
