SCGMC the Aftermath

This past weekend was the first annual Southern California Gundam Model Competition (SCGMC) presented by ThoseGundamGuys. The idea to run our own contest came out of years of frustrations when attending other model contests. So back in April, we set the wheels in motion and started working on creating our own competition. There has never been a model competition of this kind in Southern California that I know of, so we had no idea what to expect. A few of us were a bit pessimistic and we set the bar a little low just so we don’t completely disappoint ourselves. But all our hard work paid off and there really is a decent gunpla following in Southern California. We organized the event planning for about 60 people in attendance. This was our goal, and we found a venue that would support this and contacted a few vendors; then started a marketing campaign to as many local hobby shops as we could find as well as hitting the online resources for gunpla discussions.

We had an attendance of about 100 people, 35 individual entrants, entering 88 models in total. I definitely believe we surpassed our goal and I believe that we can continue to do this event annually. Hit the jump for more details and pictures of the event.

SCGMC, some OrangeCon pictures, and pictures from Hong Kong

Ok, I’ve been back from my trip to Hong Kong for a little over a week now. I’ve uploaded most of the pictures as well as pictures from Orangecon which was held on October 8. Granted I didn’t really have the time to upload the pictures after the show since I still had last minute packing for my flight to Hong Kong that left the evening of October 8. But here are the pictures from Orangecon 2011. I may write up a little blog post about my trip to Hong Kong/Taiwan, but for now, the pictures will just have to do. Hong Kong trip pictures. Ok, now on to the real meat of this post, SCGMC!

Random post of last week’s activities…

It’s been a while since I’ve had some time to sit down and write out a post. Last week, I had a business trip out to Richmond, Virginia; so taking the opportunity, I also flew up to New York to visit Jason, Claire, and my newborn godson Jackson. Getting back to LA Monday morning, I went to work for a few hours then went home. More parts for the subie came in so I did up those mods before crashing out. Yesterday, I got some paint on the diorama base. This post will be a mishmash of things starting last week.

Unicorn… again…but at least some GMs got done

Last week, I got a call from the local distributor, he needs some work done on the Unicorn statue. It’s been to several cons this past summer and over the travels to the various events, it has gotten a little beaten up here and there. One carrier even opened the sucker up in mid-freight exposing it to sunlight which yellowed a great deal of spots. This time, the beast was delivered to Funaka’s house so that we could work on it. In other news, I’ve been slipping in the last bits and pieces of work needed for the GM squad. It’s been a damn crazy busy week. I didn’t even have time this weekend save Friday to spray on the first layer of clear flat onto the parts.
