Anime Expo 2013 and a little homage to 24 year old box art

Anime Expo was this past weekend, and I think this was the least amount of time I’ve spent at the event, I only went for two days and didn’t spend too much time hitting video rooms or panels. This year, I was given two panels, one that was G-rated and one that was 18+. Apparently, last year it didn’t make it on the schedule and a number of people thought I wasn’t there. The GBWC event this year was quite impressive, a lot of new players that with a little help, will become some serious contenders. The second part of this post is to show off my recently completed Nu Gundam diorama, but then again, since it was at AX, pictures of it have already been posted. Regardless, this project was pretty different from any of my previous works. I was trying to get a close reproduction of the original 1/100 Nu Gundam box art, so pastels and hand painting was employed, it’s a little out there of a project, but I’m damn proud of it. Here are some pictures of the completed project I took the day before AX.

More about the project and thoughts on this year’s AX after the jump.

Anime Expo 2013 Tomorrow!

Yes, it is that time of year again, summer’s begun only a few weeks ago, stands selling nerfed sticks and tubes that explode when mixed with fire; it’s coming up on July 4th, and in Los Angeles, it’s Anime Expo season – at least for the next four days. My involvement with the convention has dropped considerably. I go to say hi to friends, check out a few new animes, and to enter the regional Gunpla Builders World Cup competition for North America. More information can be found here: GBWC 2013 @ Anime Expo or the distributor’s page with information about all the regional competition locations: North American GWBC 2013

A quick little trip to Hong Kong

Friday, May 3 with work in Bangkok done, I woke up around 5 in the morning, packed the things I used the night prior, checked out of the hotel, and headed to the airport for my 8:20 AM flight to Hong Kong. The plan is to stay in Hong Kong for a few days before returning home, visit with some family and do some shopping for resin kits. The flight was about 2 and a half hours, for which I don’t even remember taking off, as I had passed out as soon as I got situated. My neck was hurting a little because as I had fell asleep before take off, my seat back was in the complete upright position. I only became fully awake after landing. The two and a half hour nap should help me get through the rest of the day just fine.

Business trip to Thailand

It is the middle of April and I get word that I may need to head to Bangkok Thailand for work, training on the existing system sold prior to when I started working at this company and a demo of an updated version of the system for a bid on a second project phase. There are no direct flights to Bangkok, Thai Air has seemed to cut that route out, so all my options put me at one stop somewhere in Asia. Naturally, I pick Cathay Pacific, as they stop over in Hong Kong – and I get miles as they’re part of the whole One World alliance with American Airlines. Flights checked in, Jason and the wife drop me off at LAX around 10:30 PM Saturday night – April 27, counter for work starts. Earlier, we had moved the rest of the big items out of Yuki’s place to our place, so I’m pretty beat from the day’s events. Oddly enough, we had Thai food that night; apparently, I’m subconsciously priming myself for a week of spicy foods. Nothing too eventful happened on this trip, went to Bangkok, went to Hong Kong, and came home. Hit the jump for the long version of this story.
