For those that don’t know what SCGMC is, it’s the Southern California Gundam Model Competition. This was our 6th year hosting this competition; and even though there was a big convention happening the same weekend (Pacific Media Expo – PMX) we still did quite well. We had 280 people in attendance. Of that, 87 entered the contest with 178 entries. Yes, 178 individual entries. One guy was responsible for about 17 kits. We had people travel from Arizona, Vancouver Canada, Minnesota, Seattle, and Virginia specifically for this show. Without any doubts, this is THE BIGGEST LIVE GUNPLA contest in North America. We had several live demos that had actual hands on experience with airbrushing, water slide decal application, and photography. We set up two photography booths so that once judging was done, the entrants could grab their kits and take some professional pictures of the kits after learning how to take pictures with the live demo. We had 6 vendors including ABC Toy 4 Me, Robot 4 Less, Robo Toy Fest, Tatsu Hobby, Modelers Alley Creative Studios, and Volks Hobby USA.

The Southern California Gundam Model Competition had come and gone. There were a great deal of new changes for this year’s event. For the most part, the show was a great success. Our attendance increased from about 170 to over 250 people coming to the event. Our model entries increased from 113 individual model entries to 151 model entries. This definitely makes this show the BIGGEST GUNPLA Contest in North America. We would like to thank all those that came out to the show this year! The skill level has vastly improved. We added 4 more vendors this year. Our raffle prize wall was damn impressive. And we were very successful with our t-shirt sales. Again, thank you all for making this such a great show!

But as with all things, this was far from a perfect show. We (Those Gundam Guys) SERIOUSLY FUCKED UP. At the end of the day, this is still a model competition, and that’s where we messed up. There’s no other way to say it; and there’s just no excuse for screwing up on this level, especially after 5 years. What happened? We screwed up the awards for the 1/100 Alternate Universe, 1/144 Alternate Universe, AND Best Of Show Awards.

We hope that the community can forgive us for the screw up; and we’re already working on fixing the problems that lead up to the mistake. And we are also working on fixing the mistake we made by find the appropriate winners and sending them their rightfully won awards. We make no promises that we won’t screw up in the future, but we want the community to know that if we screw up, we own it, and will do everything within our power to make it right.

“On the 12th day until SCGMC, the folks at TGG give to you; a sneak peak at the raffle prizes!”

Ok, so I’m not really going to post every bloody day with a new lyric counting down until SCGMC; or will I? But this year we have some damn nice raffle prizes already collected, and this isn’t everything that will be at the show. This is just a taste! And where I stand, I already see two perfect grade kits.

Remember to save some money and pick up one of this year’s SCGMC Build shirts! The red Char’s shirt will only be available at the show and they’re in limited quantities, so get there early! We have 5 of each size from Small through 2XL.

Remember! SCGMC is in less than 2 weeks! Saturday, November 14, 2015!

It’s now one month away from SCGMC 2015! We are very excited because it’s our 5th year, we have a huge new venue, AND there’s the 1/144 city diorama theme. It will be damn cool to see all the dioramas put together to create one giant 1/144 city. We’ve got Feddy and Zeon shirts for sale on this site for the past several months but as an added special only available at this year’s SCGMC, we added a new shirt that is Char themed. The red Char shirt will ONLY be available at SCGMC 2015 and we only have a limited number of these shirts. During our bi-weekly broadcast, the guys teased that we would announce something special for SCGMC this year, and one of the comments screamed something to the effect of, “Great, now TGG is going to do a P-TGG thing”. The price for the Char’s shirt is going to be the same as the Feddy and Zeon shirts. But again, there will be limited numbers and only available at the show. We have sizes from Small through 2XL.

This was a busy weekend with two model events back to back. OrangeCon which is a yearly event in early October works as a good primer for SCGMC the following month; and new this year is Robotoyfest which we attended earlier in the year to judge their gundam model competition.

At OrangeCon, Mike Wine’s Officer Down took the 1st place in the Sci-Fi diorama category, but didn’t stop there; and ended up getting Best Diorama out of the 3 diorama categories. A huge feat, since there were so many diorama entries. Dan also won 2 first place awards with this 1/72 scale BF-109 as well as his Scopedog in the Sci-Fi Gundam/Mech category. I got a 3rd place for my Yukari.

It’s mid November, we’re getting our first rains and the weather is turning colder. The convention season is pretty much over with PMX being one of the last major anime/comic/asian media conventions; what better time to come to the Southern California Gundam Model Competition? If you missed it, well, you have a year to plan for the next one. We knew we pretty much outgrew our event space last year, this year really proved that point. We had about 170 attendees, a 52% increase from last year. For model entrants, we went from 42 to 70 entrants, 67% increase. The number of model entries jumped from 76 to 114 entries, 50% increase. Thanks for all the support you guys have given us in attending our event! There is a vast improvement on skills. The beginner’s table exploded, and a good number of those entrants need to move up to the advance/intermediate level. A good number of the advanced level builders need to start competing with the experts. It’s nice to win the SCGMC challenge coin, but to have your name and kit immortalized on the SCGMC Experts plaque; I’m still trying to get my name on that board! Competition is the best motivation for improvement!

Next year, we’re definitely moving to a bigger venue; then we can then explore the ideas for more vendors such as someone to sell LEDs and electronics, and folks that have too much stuff and want to set up a table swap meet style to thin out their collections. The parking at our venue is horrible, so this is definitely an issue we’re taking to heart. But if you have any issues with our event, please do not hesitate to bring them up to one of us; we’re always looking to improve the experience, and the voice of the attendees is very powerful!

From our standpoint, we felt that we’ve made some great improvements on our event. We streamlined our judging process which keeps us on schedule. We heard the moans about the small raffle cage that trapped tickets, and picked up a large acrylic barrel. We do listen! And we understand that there are always a few tweaks and things to make things better, but it’s only our 4th year. I think we’re doing pretty damn good. And we had an amazing turnout for our Unicorn Grunt theme this year.

Next year our theme will be the “1/144 City Diorama” The idea here is that everyone can push their building levels even further, and try their hand at the diorama. We had some amazing dioramas show up this year and we’d like to push that. Since next year will be our 5th year anniversary, we want to make it special. Our first year, ThoseGundamGuys as a collective built a six piece 1/144 diorama:

Next year, we want to include everyone for our 5th year display and tie it in with the competition! The diorama can be as simple as a few 1/144s on a tarmac or roadway; or as complex as a military base or city with buildings, bridges, etc. We’ll just put these things together Lego Movie style, and hopefully have a huge cityscape piece to show the world!

Ok, enough rambling, we’ll get more details about next year as soon as possible, but for now, get those ideas for your 1/144 City Diorama flowing.
