1/12 Gundam Part Deux

Continuing from where we last left you yesterday; the usual suspects returned today and we had some reinforcements later in the evening. Lakers won, I snapped random pictures with the RX-78, we decaled the ’78, and the Zaku got built; not a bad end to the day. On the way home, I picked up some sandwiches from Lee’s. When I got home, Jay, David, and Sharon were already there. Art had just got there when I pulled up. Angel and Sammy showed up shortly. Later in the evening, Hsiang Wei (Gtetra) showed up, and about two to five minutes after everyone leaves, Mitch shows up. Good thing he did, otherwise, we wouldn’t have finished the decaling for the ’78.

1/12 RX-78-2 Gundam Commission

So last week, I got a call from the local model distributor, chatting up about upcoming anime conventions, model contests, etc; and he asked if I could get a crew together to put together some 1/12 scale gunpla kits for him to use as display pieces. These large HYGM kits came out 5 years ago and I’d seen them once or twice at various conventions and events; so I jumped at the idea; I figured that the usual suspects I gather to work on such projects would be excited. This was sometime last week, and during my busy weekend, it slipped my mind until while in Solvang, someone mentioned the up coming build gathering. I mentioned the possibility of building the two 1/12 scale HYGM kits and all I could see was a HUGE grin form on Angel. They were all in, so I made the call to the distributor and said we were good to go on building the things. I figured that since the build gathering was coming up, I could pick up the kits this week and then just have them sitting there until the build gathering and then just have the folks at the gathering put them together.

Yesterday, I took off work a little early; I still have some hours to burn off too; but I made it out to the distributor’s warehouse and sat down with the guy to discuss some other up coming events and a contest event I’m working on for him. Two hours later – the guy likes to talk, we get around to moving the boxes for the two kits to load into my little tc. I fold down all the seats, and everything fits perfectly. I take off on my way home and then I remember a little bit of the conversation from earlier. I give the guy a call back to confirm that the two kits need to be finished by Friday; he confirms. There goes the idea of doing this at the build gathering. On the drive home, I call up the most local of model builders that I know may be free to help out tonight; and set the evening’s events into motion.

ValleyCon 2010

This past weekend was Pasadena Modelers Society’s annual contest Valley Con. A group of us from the build gatherings showed up and just ended up filling the table with gunpla. For which none of us won anything. There were quite a few very well done kits, but some of the things that won just boggled our minds a little. Oh well, what can you do when they lump all the science fiction into two categories: mechanical and creature. Odd that they’d add a category such as “Armored Trains” which had about 4 or 5 kits total, instead of better organizing the science fiction category. But for most of us sci-fi model builders, we’re used to being thrown into a corner and not having people give a rats ass about us. It’s even more niche and worse for the gundam modelers.

Weekend Update

Another busy weekend goes by. I was off on Friday so Art, Ed and I went back up to Bear Mt. From Saturday, we got some $10 off coupons for Sunday-Fridays and got to use them. The weather was nice and warm, and we got to the resort before the lifts started running. We had a great day and I ended up doing about 21 runs before calling it a day at 3 in the afternoon. Returning home on Friday, my HID conversion kit came in the mail so I spent roughly 20 minutes making the install to my car.

A few of us went and saw Alice in Wonderland on Saturday for which I felt was a better movie than the last Depp/Burton Wonka experience. Sunday was spent at ValleyCon trying win little plaques for model building. Unfortunately, my camera stopped working, I had put some batteries out of a brand new pack of batteries, and after testing my camera just now, apparently one or more of the batteries were bad. Oh well, lesson learned is to bring more batteries.
