Anime Expo 2011 – precon post

So this week, Friday through Monday, July 1 – 4 will be the annual Anime Expo. I’ve been a bit out of the loop due to work and life (having one that is…). Between Memorial day weekend and now, the group of us have been to Arizona, Vegas, hosted a build gathering, done the tango classes, and just gathered at the house to hang out and munch on food. The rest of my waking hours have been spent with work as my project has continued to downsize and I’ve taken up more and more responsibilities. I can’t even go in and study for some certification exams I have coming up that are for work without spending about half the day working on the day to day things. But by this time the last few years, I would have had one more day of work before throwing myself into the fury that is AX. Heh, I actually took vacation time to work, for free, at the con. But it was fun and interesting work and I got to meet some great young folks.

1/12 Unicorn Gundam Destroy Mode

So a few weeks ago, the local gunpla distributor asked me and the gang for suggestions to enhance a 6’5 tall Unicorn Destroy Mode Gundam. There is one other in Hong Kong that I know of, perhaps more exist, but this is probably the second one. We came up with a quick plan on what we could do in the short period of time before Anime Expo. The first step was to spray a clear gloss over the surface. The status is mostly made of wood and the paint is a little rough, so we sprayed several layers of clear gloss. The unfortunate side effect is that it yellowed the surface slightly. And areas where heavier spraying was done, by me of course, yellowed even more. The statue was left alone to cure and some sanding was done to clean up some of the lightly yellowed areas. The head got the most yellowing.

SD Nightengale Progress

So a few weeks ago, I started working on this project, then real life and general laziness took over as usual. The thing is littered with seams and there are a few spots where the molding process left some ugliness in the plastic. There are quite a few things that need to be fixed on this guy before I can even spray the first coats of primer. I haven’t even gotten the entire thing sanded and snapped. Little snags here and there are slowing the progress.

Model Build Gathering 48

The June model build gathering for a number of us saw very little building. Considering that the past couple of build gatherings have had some fairly heavy non stop building; the group of us felt like just hanging out and relaxing for this gathering. The build started off slow, but we got a few new folks for the gathering. I did get about three or so pieces sanded before the alcohol started flowing. With Duke over; Kenken as our new addition to the household; and Latte, Nathan’s puppy who is Kenken’s little brother, the house was up to 5 corgis.
