Southern California Gundam Model Competition 2015

SCGMC is a gunpla competition held in Southern California in November. Saturday, November 14, 2015 to be exact. It is a niche model competition focusing mostly on gunpla. Other anime models are always welcomed and highly encouraged, such as Mak, Five Star Stories, Macross/Robotech, Evangelion, Votoms, etc. Anime resin figures are also very much welcomed. That said, each year, there is a special theme; this year’s theme is the 1/144 City Diorama. We create the special theme each year to help push builders to explore techniques outside their sphere of comfort. There is a special award for this theme; but it is only 1 of a current listing of 11 categories.

SCGMC is about anime/mecha model building. So to promote that, we have 11 categories that spans the Gundam universe, other anime mecha, resin figures, and dioramas in general.

ValleyCon 2015 at the Ronald Reagan Library

This past Sunday was the 25th Anniversary ValleyCon event. Damn, SCGMC is coming up on 5 years…. I can only hope to be as successful to get another 20 years. This year was different from the past several years that I’ve attended – they held the contest at the Ronald Reagan Library, under the old 707 Air Force One. Damn cool. There were also cars on loan from the Peterson Auto Museum as well as an old Marine One. We were allowed into Air Force One and Marine One, but no pictures were allowed inside. Damn cool to walk the insides of these aircraft.

It was a very impressive show. They had over 600 entries. There were alot of amazing entries and I didn’t have time to snap pictures of everything because there was just so much more to see and do that the library.

Some more details and commentary after the jump.

GBWC Results from Anime Expo 2014

This past AX was probably one of my shortest stays at the convention. I normally spend at least 3 days, but there were just too many people and nothing that truly pulled me as far as interests. Where I used to wander the halls and take pictures of just about everything, I pretty much only focused on the GBWC, my two panels, and promoting SCGMC as much as possible. This year was pretty damn crowded. I don’t believe I have ever seen this large a sea of people. And in the previous years, the lines for registration after the first day is usually fairly tolerable; I’m pretty surprised at how long people still had to wait for getting registered even on day 3. Yeah, this con has taken a huge jump in attendance. I also noticed that the exhibit hall has grown considerably with a great deal more vendors. Crazy.
